When you are a cat owner, you may take for granted the fact that your cats are relatively self-sufficient and can take care of themselves. Begin by placing a small amount of cat toothpaste on your finger and letting your cat sniff it and lick it off of your finger. Then, you can graduate up to allowing them to do the same with toothpaste from a cat toothbrush. 

Once they are used to that, you can try to begin brushing their teeth gently. They may still not take to the process right away, but remain consistent. The more you practice brushing their teeth with your cat, the better they will respond to you actually brushing their teeth in the future. Soon enough, it will become a part of their regular, daily routine. 

Take Them In for a Yearly Dental Checkup

The dental care that you provide your cat at home is important, and it will help to keep a great deal of plaque and tartar off of your cat's teeth. This, in turn, can help to reduce dental rot and periodontitis (severe gum disease). However, just like with humans, daily brushing is not always enough to keep teeth in the best shape possible. 

While humans should go in twice a year for dental cleanings and checkups, cats can go about once a year for their examinations. Your cat's veterinarian will perform a general exam of your cat's teeth. If they notice anything troublesome, they may wish to perform an x-ray on your cat's mouth. This will give them a better look at teeth and gums to address any major problems.
